Location
Kelowna is the major city in the Central Okanagan. By highway, the city is 471 km east of Vancouver, B.C., 78 km north of Penticton B.C., and 606km west of Calgary, AB. Situated along Okanagan Lake, Kelowna is also close to many smaller lakes and waterways.
Weather
Summer temperatures average 27.4° C, though it can get considerably warmer. Summer evenings provide an escape from the heat with an average temperature of 10° C. Kelowna winter temperatures are mild, averaging 0° C, with a mix of rain and snow. Kelowna receives over 2,000 hours of sunlight and 14 inches of precipitation annually. In this semiarid climate you will find Ponderosa Pine, Sagebrush, and even cactus plants growing naturally around the region.
Recreation
Kelowna has miles of parkland, beautiful beaches, world class golf courses, and other recreational ameneities. Golfing, Hiking, Biking, Mountain Climbing, boating, fishing, and swimming are just a few of the things you can do here. In the cooler months, downhill skiing and snowboarding (Big White, Crystal Mountain, and Silver Star are all nearby), cross country skiing, and snowmobiling make for fun winter activities.
Culture
Kelowna is host to a vibrant cultural community. Housed within a 6 block core in the downtown area, you will find fine dining, museums, art galleries, theatres, artists' studios, and a casino. As well, Prospera Place where you can take in a concert, or WHL hockey game.
Dining and Shopping
Regardless of where in Kelowna you choose to settle, you will be close to an abundance of restaurants and shopping locations. There is a wide array of culturally diverse franchised and locally owned and operated restaurants to suit your dining-out needs. As well, Kelowna has the best shopping between Vancouver and Calgary. Be it large stores, or boutique shoppes, Kelowna has an excellent array of shopping options.
Orchards and vineyards are situated merely a 10 minute drive from the downtown core. Kelowna is home to world class, innovative, and large and small orchards and vineyards that are thriving. The Spring, Summer, and Fall Wine festivals offer wine enthusiasts an opportunity to taste, appreciate, honor, and tour. Most wineries are open for year-round tours as well.
